Hickory History & Overview
Founded in 1863 as "Hickory Tavern," this vibrant city has evolved from a furniture manufacturing hub into a diverse economic center known for technology, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing. Today, Hickory is the largest city in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city's name comes from the Hickory Tavern, a popular stagecoach stop built near a large hickory tree. This historical legacy is preserved in the city's downtown district, which features beautifully restored buildings alongside modern developments.
Hickory is home to Lenoir-Rhyne University, a private Lutheran university founded in 1891, which brings cultural enrichment and educational opportunities to the region. The city also boasts the famous Hickory Motor Speedway, known as "The World's Most Famous Short Track."
